Question by Anna: How do I lose the fat in the upper and lower abdominal areas?
I had a lumbar fusion and the surgeon tells me not to do sit ups or crunches. So how do I get this area back into shape?

Eat less. A LOT less. It’s pretty simple. Put down the fork, you gravy-drinking hound dog.

hit a bike and set the difficulty level
Hiking and rollerblading for an hour or more each day.
It takes a healthy diet and proper exercise. I don’t buy into these fad diets. I still eat what I like, but I try to minimize the portions of the fatty foods. For example, I’ll take a bowl of fruit with my lunch and I always eat the fruit first to fill up more on something that’s good for me…and I end up eating less of something that’s not as good for me. I also take a fitness ball class. I’ve lost like 20 pounds since I started the class last year.
you can’t target fat in a particular area of your body – you lose fat over your entire body. burning less calories than you consume is how it works, so you’ll have to do some aerobic exercises. crunches or situps would tone the abs, but ask your doctor if there are any other exercises he would recommend to tone those muscles – maybe leg lifts or something that will hit your abs without putting a lot of strain on your back.
Ask you doctor.

The biggest help will be diet. No kidding. An exercise you MIGHT be able to is isometric contractions. Get in the push up position but rest on your forearms. Keep your back straight and you tummy in. Hold for as long as possible. Repeat 3-4 times. Then, in that position, rotate and balance on your right forearm, left hand on left hip, and keep your hips in line with your body. Repeat on other side. Another exercise is called the vacuum. Stand up, and suck in to get your tummy as skinny as it can go. Breathe if you want, but hold that in as skinny as possible, and flex. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 5 times.
